Thrones, Dominations, by Dorothy Sayers and Jill Paton Walsh.

Thrones, Dominations. by Dorothy Sayers and Jill Paton Walsh. (A Lord Peter Wimsey Mystery) St. Martin’s Paperbacks (1999), Mass Market Paperback, 322 pages.

An enjoyable mystery involving Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane.

Lord Peter Wimsey and his bride, Harriet Vane, have just returned to London from their honeymoon when a murder occurs among their acquaintances. In the background, King Edward dies, his son continues his affair with Mrs. Simpson, and war threatens on the continent. Harriet is trying to figure out how to be Lady Wimsey without giving up her identity and writing career. Although she is not as directly involved in the mystery as in the mysteries which feature her, her struggle which provides lots of opportunity for comments about marriage and wifely expectations. The result is a delightful mystery in the tradition of Dorothy Sayers.

When Sayers died, she left several manuscripts uncompleted. Jill Paton Walsh has revised and finished several of these, including Thrones and Dominions. She has done a fine job updating the language of the original Wimsy series without losing Sayers wit and sparkle.

Recommended for anyone wanting a comfortable mystery with a feminist touch.
